A surface water drain blockage can turn a normal spell of rain into standing water around your home, overflowing gullies or a flooded car park. Unlike a blockage in a toilet or kitchen drain, it is often only obvious when the weather turns. By then, water may be pooling against walls, crossing paths or finding its way into garages, basements and commercial premises.

What does a surface water drain do?
Surface water drains collect rainfall through gullies, grids, channel drains and downpipes. They usually serve external areas only, carrying rainwater away from the property and into a soakaway, watercourse or public surface water sewer, depending on the age and layout of the property.
This is different from foul drainage, which carries wastewater from toilets, sinks, showers and appliances. The two systems should normally be separate, although older properties can have combined drainage. A blocked gully near a downpipe may appear to be a small maintenance issue. However, if the pipe below it is obstructed, damaged or poorly connected, clearing leaves from the top will only provide a temporary improvement.

The most obvious sign is water that remains around a gully, grate or channel drain after rain has stopped. Slow drainage is also worth investigating, particularly if it has become noticeably worse over time.

Do not remove drain covers if they are heavy, damaged or located in a live traffic area. Avoid using chemicals in external drains. They are unlikely to shift silt, roots or compacted debris, and can create unnecessary risks for you, the pipework and the environment.
It is also best not to force rods into a drain without knowing the layout. Drain rods can become stuck, damage a weakened pipe or push a blockage further along. If the problem returns after basic clearing, it needs a proper assessment rather than more guesswork.

Avoid washing soil, gravel or garden waste towards external drains. During landscaping, protect gullies and channel drains from loose material. If work is taking place near a drain, make sure cement washout and other building waste are kept well away from the system.
